Training to become an architect

If you decide to pursue a professional master’s degree in architecture, you’ll need to have a bachelor’s degree in a related field first. Once you’re enrolled in a master’s program, you’ll take classes that focus specifically on architecture, and you’ll also complete an internship. Most professional master’s programs can be completed in two years, but some may take up to three years. After you graduate from a professional master’s program, you’ll be eligible to take the ARE.
Once you’ve completed an accredited architecture program and an internship, you’ll be eligible to take the ARE. The ARE is a seven-part exam that covers topics like building design, construction materials and methods, and practice management. You can take the ARE as many times as you need to pass, and you can choose to take one or all of the sections at once.
